A driver who ran from a crash in Melbourne's north has died after being arrested.

Three cars collided at an intersection in Craigieburn just after 6am on Friday.

Police have been told a male driver tried to flee and was arrested by a member of the public before emergency services arrived.

He was then taken into custody and became unresponsive.

Paramedics treated the unidentified man at the scene and he was pronounced dead.

Victoria Police's Professional Standards Command will oversee an investigation into what happened, which is standard practice when a person dies in custody.

No one else was injured in the collision.
