A koala has taken on Australia's burliest men in a daring last-minute entry into this year's Ironman Australia Triathlon.

The fuzzy Port Macquarie local was spotted bouncing into the street in front of his human competitors as they completed the final leg of the race.

The late entry was filmed by Jason Hannah, a local resident who was watching the triathlon.

Mr Hannah later shared the video on his social media, where he can be heard encouraging the koala as he approached the race track.

"Here he goes. Here he goes. Here he goes. Look out!" Mr Hannah cheered as the koala entered the race.

Unfortunately, the koala is seen heading towards a gum tree rather than the finish line costing him a spot on the winner's podium.

The Ironman Australia Triathlon is the fourth oldest Ironman race in the world and there has yet to be a non-human winner.
